A thesis proposal is the plan for your research. The committee uses it to decide whether the study is meaningful, feasible and achievable within the time available. A good proposal is half the thesis, because drafts of your introduction and methods chapters come from it.
Sections of a thesis proposal
Details vary by institution, but proposals usually include:
- Title: clear, reflecting variables, sample and context
- Problem and significance: the issue you address and why it matters
- Aims and research questions/hypotheses
- Brief literature review: key studies and the gap
- Methods: design, sample, instruments, analysis
- Ethics: whether ethics approval is needed
- Timeline
- References
What committees look at most
- Coherence: Are problem, aims, research questions and method connected? A relationship question needs a correlational design.
- Feasibility: Can you reach participants? Do you have permission to use the scales?
- Scope: Is the topic narrow enough for a thesis?
- Gap: Is it clear why the study is needed?
Writing tips
- Use the future tense: "Data will be collected using…"
- Do not promise results. You cannot report findings of a study not yet done; "it is expected that…" is more appropriate.
- Be specific about methods: instead of "appropriate statistical analyses will be performed", state which analysis answers which question.
- Keep the timeline realistic: ethics approval, scale permissions and data collection usually take longer than expected.
Common mistakes
- Research questions and methods that do not match
- A literature section that turns into a list of sources
- No justification for sample size
- No mention of the ethics process
