How to Find Turkish Academic Sources: DergiPark, TR Dizin and the YÖK Thesis Center

A guide to Turkish academic databases: searching DergiPark, TR Dizin and the YÖK National Thesis Center effectively, access restrictions and correct citation.

If your research is about Türkiye or you study at a Turkish university, showing the Turkish literature strengthens your context and answers the committee’s frequent question: "What has been done on this in Türkiye?" Three sources are essential.

DergiPark

DergiPark, provided by TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM, hosts most academic journals published in Türkiye. Most articles are open access.

Search tips:

  • Search with both Turkish and English keywords; many articles have English abstracts.
  • Use quotation marks for exact phrases: "self-esteem"
  • Filter results by year and journal.
  • Being on DergiPark does not mean a journal is indexed in a particular index; check the journal page.

TR Dizin

TR Dizin, also run by TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM, is a national index of Turkish journals that meet certain quality criteria. Journals indexed in TR Dizin may carry additional weight in academic evaluations in Türkiye.

What it is useful for:

  • Focusing on higher-quality Turkish sources
  • Checking the index status of a Turkish journal you plan to submit to

YÖK National Thesis Center

The official database of master’s and doctoral theses completed in Türkiye, run by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).

Search tips:

  • Use advanced search with title, author, subject, university and year.
  • Access to some full texts may be restricted at the author’s request; you may only see the record and abstract.
  • When citing a thesis, state the thesis type (master’s/doctoral) and university.

Using Turkish sources well

  • Go to the primary source. Do not cite a foreign study you only saw mentioned in a Turkish review.
  • Do not report detailed findings of a study you only read the abstract of.
  • Use theses judiciously. If the same work was published as an article, citing the article is usually preferred.
  • Record full details: journal title, volume, issue, pages and DOI (if any).
